Grade 1/ Day 1

1#1 The project that I made today was a sculpture using, toothpicks, Styrofoam like puffs, a Styrofoam cup, plaster strips, clay. We were able to create whatever we wanted with these materials as long as it was on top of the styrofoam cup. At the end we were then to combine all of our groups sculptures together to create a theme. Our theme was music so we made a band and I turned my sculpture upside down to resemble a trumpet.
#2 I had never used the plaster strips until today, they were very interesting, you dip them in water and then form them into what you want as they harden into place. This project can be very versatile when it comes to different cultures when we were asked at the end to transform our individual sculptures into a group sculpture it could have been anything from anywhere. You could have used cross curriculum here and had one of us make a science sculpture, one person can make a social studies sculpture, another person can make a gym related sculpture etc.
3#3 When making this project I feel that is communicated power. The height of the tower I feel represents a form of high power. The higher I could make the tower the stronger and more powerful it looked and felt to me. It communicates power in the sense of hierarchy, just like Maslow's hierarchy.
4#4  I enjoyed the freedom we got at the beginning to make what ever we wanted using the materials we were given. There was no guide lines and everyones sculptures were so different and unique. The part about this project I didn't like was that the sculptures were difficult to build once you got a certain height you would have to add to it so it didn't fall over. It became even more difficult when we had to combine our projects as a whole group. I had to start over and build again because my sculpture was really lopsided.
5#5 To change this project I would add one or two more building materials and take away the styrofoam cup to start so that projects could have a more sturdy base. I found the cup gave this project the most challenging aspect, and for grade one I believe it would have been a hard task. I had to completely restart the project because my sculpture was not sturdy at first. Adding in other materials may make it easier to use the styrofoam cup, materials such as popsicle sticks or wire could make it easier to make it more sturdy.
