Grade 5/ Day 5
#1 The art form this week was painting. We were taught 11 techniques this week for painting.
One point perspective drawing, on a large white page horizontal landscape we drew a line just above half, then drew a point on that line, and drew two diagonal lines down from the other line to the bottom of the page. Next we added a low line mountain range, then a second and a third mountain range and added some clouds. From the dot we made make dotted lines down wards and some upwards. We drew lines between those "invisible lines" they could be trees or hydro poles. I chose hydro poles. Next we went over painting instructions, how to organize it, how to clean it. Assign them jobs, water, brushes, paint, etc. put your brushes in an upright position to dry. To make it even easier organize a painting kit. Only use tempured paint in the classroom. get things to hold paint, don't distribute the jug, use a plastic or styrofoam egg carton.
After this is when we went through 11 different painting techniques: Transparent& overlapping shapes, Opaque Primary Colours, Mixing Secondary Colours, Mixing Intermediate/ Tertiary Colours, Complimentary Colours, Warm & Cool Colours, Tints & Shades, Monochromatic, Crayon Resist, Dry Brush, and Sponge Painting.
Next we used 5 or more of these techniques to paint the previous picture we had drawn. We used paint pucks, tempura paint, powdered paint and crayons for this project.
#2 I learned through this project how to use crayons and paint together. I had never thought of the crayon resist technique before this. I liked how easy it was and there are many things that you could use it for. After we were taught the technique we needed to incorporate it into our larger picture. I decided to use the crayon to make the yellow dashes for the road and then paint over the road in grey. It was a very quick and easy way to paint the road and not have to overlap or blend colours.
#3 What I felt was communicated through the final piece in this project (the last picture) was two ideas. The first one I did was there is a divided in the picture I used the road for this on one side it is very bright green and happy but on the left hand side it is brown and grungy showing a little bit of a darker more sad feeling. The sunset I used warm colours showing that in the distance everyone can feel happy and loved.
#4 I enjoyed the blending techniques that we were learning, both the tints and shades, monochromatics, and the mixing intermediate colours. I really liked the tinting of the colour by starting with white and slowly add black little by little. I liked this as you could go through many different shades. I did not like the warm cool colours one with the water. I found it very messy and it didn't seem to really blend. I am wondering if maybe it was the paint as it went all clumpy.
#5 To make this project more successful I would like to allow my students to practise more with each painting technique so that they get a better grasp. Paint is a very messy and sometimes teachers avoid painting for this reason. I would like to show students that it doesn't have to be messy and that way we can paint more often in the classroom.
